How to Measure for a Sofa: Step-by-Step Guide Before You Order

Buying a big sofa online can feel stressful. Nothing ruins the excitement more than finding out your new sofa cannot fit through the front door or crowd your living room. This simple measuring checklist helps you avoid returns and delivery headaches.

### Step 1: Measure the wall where your sofa will sit First, measure the usable wall length. Skip windows, pillars, radiators or built-in cabinets. Write down the maximum available width for your sofa. As a rule of thumb: leave at least 18–24 inches of free space on both sides of the sofa for balance.

### Step 2: Measure walking clearance in the room Check the space in front of the sofa. We recommend 30 inches minimum for easy walking. If you place a coffee table in front, keep enough room to stretch your legs and pass through comfortably.

### Step 3: Measure your delivery path (super important for large sofas) This is the step most shoppers miss. Measure every spot the sofa must pass through: - Front doorway width & height - Hallway width - Stairwell landing and stair turning space - Elevator door and internal cabin size Compare these numbers against the sofa’s total width, depth and height. If you have tight corners, confirm whether the sofa has removable legs. Most of our large sofas come with detachable legs to make delivery easier.

### Step 4: Test with painter’s tape Mark the sofa’s full footprint on your floor using painter’s tape. Walk around it, open nearby doors, and check your TV viewing angle. This quick trick lets you visualize exactly how it will feel.

### Quick size reference - 3-seater sofa: best for medium living rooms - Oversized / deep seat sofa: great for family lounging, requires more floor space - Sectional sofa: needs careful corner measurement Ready to find a perfectly sized sofa for your home?
